About

Abbie Werner James

loves to read and write children’s books.

While I’m not a fan of flying in airplanes, I am drawn to birds. They flutter into nearly every story I write. Writing might be for me what soaring across the sky is for them!

I have written many novels and picture books that I’m excited to share with young readers! While birds swoop in at times, my novels are mostly about real issues young people handle every day—friendship friction, family frustrations, mental health, environmental concerns . . . but there’s plenty of fun in there, too. My picture books tend to join social and emotional learning, humor, and natural science. Love for nature appears often in my writing.

When not observing birds or herding words, I work in youth services at an awesome public library. I also enjoy attempting to garden all year round and hiking with my family in search of ghost pipes. Or you might find me listening to music and eating chocolate chip cookies! I have a master’s degree in human sciences—because while birdwatching is cool, it’s also neat to learn about why we humans do what we do.

Thanks for stopping by, readers! Hope you’re about to pull a great book off the shelf.
